CHAPTER 6 — THE END

One year later...

The Whitmore mansion stood empty.

It had been sold to satisfy civil judgments awarded to Emma.

The grand ballroom where Victoria once entertained politicians became part of a rehabilitation foundation for survivors of domestic violence.

Its doors remained open to families seeking safety.

Emma returned there for the dedication ceremony.

Not as a victim.

As the keynote speaker.

She looked out across the crowd before lifting little Grace into her arms.

"I used to think surviving was enough," she said.

"Now I know healing means making sure someone else doesn't suffer in silence."

The audience rose in a standing ovation.

I stood in the back of the room, remembering the rain, the bus stop, the hospital, and the match that never burned.

That day, I almost let anger decide our future.

Instead, truth did.

And truth accomplished what fire never could.

It protected the innocent.

It punished the guilty.

It gave my daughter—and my granddaughter—a future worth living.
