Chapter 7 - Shadows in the Underground Parking

As the weeks rolled on, Victoria Sterling’s professional defeat metastasized into a quiet, desperate bitterness. Realizing she could not defeat Bailey through corporate channels, she began digging into the background of the former night cleaner, searching for any scandal, any debt, or any vulnerability she could exploit to destroy her rival.
It was a rainy Thursday evening at 9:00 PM. Bailey was working late in her fourth-floor office, finalizing the emergency deployment schedules for the regional offices.
When she finally packed her briefcase and took the service elevator down to the underground parking garage to retrieve her car, the atmosphere in the concrete cavern felt heavy and oppressive. The fluorescent lights flickered softly against the wet pavement.
As Bailey walked toward her sedan parked near the concrete pillars, she heard the sharp clack of heels echoing behind her.
She stopped, turning around.
Stepping out from the shadow of a concrete pillar was Victoria Sterling, flanked by two rough-looking men in dark leather jackets—corporate debt collectors she had secretly hired from a shady third-party agency.
“Looking for something, Miss Montgomery?” Victoria sneered, stepping closer, her eyes glittering with malicious satisfaction.
Bailey’s hand slipped instinctively into her briefcase, her fingers brushing against her heavy metal keychain. “What is the meaning of this, Victoria?”
“I dug into your little file, Bailey,” Victoria hissed, stepping into her personal space. “I found out about your mother’s hospital debts. I found out how close you were to financial ruin before our dear CEO decided to play white knight and pay off your bills using corporate discretionary funds. Embezzlement? Breach of fiduciary duty? How do you think the board will react when I leak proof that Lucas Bennett is funding his personal pets with company money?”
Before Bailey could answer, a deep, resonant voice echoed off the concrete walls of the parking garage like a gunshot.
“Let’s test that theory right now, Victoria.”
Victoria gasped, spinning around.
Stepping out from behind a row of parked black SUVs was Lucas Bennett himself, flanked by two federal security agents in suits. His face was a mask of cold, arctic fury.
“L-Lucas!” Victoria stammered, her face draining of all color. “What… what are you doing here? I was just… we were just having a conversation—”
“You were harassing an executive of this company, attempting extortion, and trespassing in a secure corporate facility after hours,” Lucas interrupted, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register. “Arthur has already frozen your accounts, and these federal agents have warrants for your arrest on charges of industrial espionage and corporate harassment.”
The two security agents stepped forward, grabbing Victoria by the arms and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists.

“You can’t do this!” Victoria screamed, thrashing wildly as they dragged her toward a waiting van. “You’re destroying my career over a fucking janitor?!”
“She’s not a janitor, Victoria,” Lucas said coldly, watching her disappear into the shadows. “She’s the reason you’re still breathing the same air as the rest of us.”
