Chapter 6 - Shadows in the Nursery

The heavy oak doors of the Vance Estate closed behind Arthur with a comforting, solid thud that signaled the absolute security of the fortress he had rebuilt.

Upstairs in the nursery, the radiator hummed softly, filling the room with a gentle, tropical warmth that chased away the chill of the December night.

Four-year-old Leo was fast asleep in his toddler bed, clutching a stuffed plush teddy bear tightly against his chest, his breathing deep, rhythmic, and entirely untroubled.

Arthur stood in the doorway for a long time, watching the rise and fall of his son’s small chest. The dark circles under his own eyes were fading, replaced by the quiet resilience of a father who had stared into the abyss and successfully protected his child from the monsters lurking in the dark.

Maria walked up beside him, holding a steaming mug of black coffee.

“He hasn’t asked about her once, Mr. Vance,” Maria murmured softly, handing the mug to Arthur. “Children are resilient, but they also know when they are truly safe. The bad energy in this house is gone.”

Arthur took a slow sip of the coffee, letting the warmth spread through his chest. “I know, Maria. But we can never let our guard down again. Wealth attracts parasites. I spent too much time building an empire and not enough time vetting the people I let inside the walls.”

“An empire isn't built on stone and steel, Mr. Vance,” Maria replied wisely, looking around the warm, book-filled nursery. “It’s built on loyalty. And you finally have the right people standing beside you.”

Arthur smiled, raising his mug in a silent toast to the woman who had held his family together through fire and ice.

“To loyalty, Maria. And to a new beginning.”

Later that night, as the grandfather clock in the grand foyer chimed midnight, Arthur sat at his mahogany desk in the private study, signing the final legal documents transferring full, irrevocable primary guardianship and executive trust control over to a multi-tiered family council where Maria held permanent voting rights alongside himself.

The Vance name was no longer a symbol of corporate vulnerability. It was a fortress.
