Chapter 4 - Into the Night

Now, crossing the marble lobby of the luxury hotel toward the exit, the heavy ballroom doors swung open behind her with a muffled thud.

"Amy?"

It was Daniel’s voice, sharp and laced with sudden urgency.

She didn't stop. She didn't turn around. Her heels clicked steadily against the stone floor.

"Amy!"

Faster footsteps echoed behind her. The hotel exit was less than fifteen feet away. Through the revolving glass doors, she could see the sleek black town car idling at the curb, its hazard lights pulsing softly in the rain. One suitcase was already resting securely in the trunk—packed that very afternoon before she even set foot in the ballroom, as if some deep, intuitive part of her already knew how the night would end.

A doorman reached for the exterior handle, pulling the door open just as Daniel caught up to her, grabbing her bare elbow.

"What are you doing?" Daniel demanded, breathing slightly heavily, his tuxedo jacket slightly rumpled from his frantic dash through the crowd.

Amy turned slowly, looking down at his hand on her arm until he instinctively let go.

"Going somewhere," she said evenly.

"Where?"

"Away."

His eyes narrowed, skepticism fighting irritation on his face. "What happened back there?"

She almost laughed again. "What happened?"

"Yes, Amy. I’ve been working the room, managing donors, securing three million in endowment pledges all night. If I missed something—"

"You missed something," she interrupted, her voice dangerously quiet.

His expression flickered, a sudden shadow crossing his features. "Is this about Vanessa?"

Amy said nothing. Her silence was louder than any accusation.

Daniel lowered his voice, stepping closer. "That dance meant nothing. It was optics for the board."

There it was. Not I'm sorry. Not I crossed a line. Not I hurt you.

It meant nothing.

Amy nodded slowly, her eyes locked on his. "That might be the exact problem, Daniel. Everything with you means nothing until it threatens your control."

"What is that supposed to mean?"

She reached for the car door, but Daniel stepped in front of it, his hand blocking her path. "Can we not do this in the street?"

"There is nothing left to do here."

"Stop talking like that."

"Like what?"

"Like you've already decided our entire lives."

Amy looked straight into his eyes, seeing the man she had loved for seven years—and realizing how completely foreign he had become. "I did, Daniel. Months ago. I was just too stubborn to admit it."

For the first time all evening, genuine fear flickered in Daniel’s obsidian eyes. He dropped his gaze, and his breath hitched.

"Where’s your ring?"

Amy didn't answer.

His eyes darted down to her left hand. Bare. Smooth skin where a symbol of eternal devotion used to sit. Daniel went completely rigid, the blood draining from his face.

"Amy," he whispered, his voice losing its corporate edge.

She pulled open the car door, sliding her skirt neatly into the back seat.

"Amy, where is your ring?" he demanded, panic finally breaking through his polished exterior.

"Ask your mother."

May you like

Then she pulled the door shut.

The driver shifted into gear, pulling the town car away from the curb smoothly. Daniel remained standing under the hotel canopy, the harsh exterior lights beating down on his tuxedo as his figure shrank rapidly in the rear window. He didn't chase the car; he stood frozen, paralyzed by an unfamiliar reality.
