Chapter 4 - The Recognition of Ruin

Walter blinked, his mouth opening and closing like a landed fish as his brain struggled to connect the terrified, weeping girl on his porch with the terrifying corporate overlord standing before him.
"V-Vincent Sterling?" Walter stammered, taking an involuntary half-step backward into the foyer. "What... what are you doing here? This is a private family matter. Claire has been unstable since the funeral, and—”
"Shut your mouth, Walter," Vincent said quietly.
The three words weren't shouted. They didn't need to be. They carried the weight of a man who could bankrupt a corporation before lunch without breaking a sweat.
Tatum pushed her way past Walter from the hallway, wearing one of my silk robes, her face twisted in an arrogant sneer. "Hey! You can't just land a helicopter on private property! Who do you think you are? Walter, call the cops! These men are trespassing!"
Vincent didn't even look at her. He didn't acknowledge her existence. He simply raised two fingers toward the second security operative, who stepped forward holding a sleek aluminum briefcase.
"Mr. Voss," Vincent said, standing up to his full height, towering over my father by half a foot. "Let me enlighten you regarding the legal status of the property you are currently standing in."
Walter swallowed hard, his face losing whatever ruddy color it had left. "Owen left the estate to... to probate court. We filed the emergency conservatorship papers this morning."
"You forged probate documents," Vincent corrected him smoothly, pulling a crisp sheaf of legal papers from the aluminum briefcase. "Which is a federal felony under Interstate Wire and Securities Fraud statutes, given that Vanguard Logistics' holding trust is federally incorporated in Delaware."
Walter’s jaw dropped. "That’s... that’s impossible. We used a licensed notary in Queens—"
"A notary who was arrested by federal marshals twenty minutes ago for taking bribes," Vincent interrupted, his lips curving into a humorless, predatory smile. "Furthermore, under Section 14 of Owen’s primary will—a document drafted by Sterling & Cole legal counsel three years ago—any attempt by a blood relative to claim conservatorship through fraudulent means results in an immediate, irrevocable forfeiture of any and all trust stipends, retainers, or property claims."
Vincent tossed a single sheet of paper at Walter’s feet. It fluttered down and landed squarely on the welcome mat.
"Congratulations, Walter," Vincent said softly. "You are officially broke."
Tatum’s face went chalk-white. She snatched the paper off the floor, her eyes scanning the legal jargon with growing panic. "No... no, this isn't real! Walter, tell him he's lying! We have the buyer lined up! The closing is scheduled for Thursday!"
"The buyer was a shell company owned by my firm," Vincent replied without a flicker of emotion. "We let you dangle the hook so we could map out every single financial collaborator assisting your little heist. Every bank account you tied to this house has already been frozen by court order."
Walter grabbed the doorframe for support, his knees buckling slightly. "You... you can't do that. I'm her father!"
"You're a parasite," Vincent stated flatly.
Before Walter could stammer another syllable, a fresh, agonizing contraction tore through my body. I let out a sharp, involuntary cry, my fingers digging into Vincent’s sleeve.
Vincent looked down at me, his icy demeanor instantly melting back into fierce, protective urgency. He didn't wait for another word. He scooped me up into his arms as easily as if I weighed nothing, cradling my swollen body against his chest, and turned toward the waiting helicopter.

"Get her on board," Vincent commanded his men. "Now."
As the security operatives gently lifted me through the cabin door, I caught one final glimpse of my father and Tatum standing frozen in the doorway of my home. The moving boxes were still stacked in the hall behind them, a monument to their staggering greed—now reduced to nothing more than trash in a house they no longer owned, belonging to a family they had tried to destroy.
