Chapter 1: The Recording No One Expected

The nanny's smile faltered for only a fraction of a second before she recovered.
"Mr. Whitmore," she laughed lightly. "I have no idea what this is about."
Daniel never moved.
His phone remained recording in his hand.
"I asked you a question."
Her eyes flickered toward the girls.
"They've been through a terrible loss. They imagine things."
The oldest triplet shook her head violently.
I signed slowly.
Not your fault. Tell the truth.
Tiny fingers lifted.
The smallest girl signed with trembling hands.
She said Mommy left because we were too loud.
The restaurant became perfectly still.
The nanny forced another smile.
"I was only trying to comfort them."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"So you comforted my daughters by telling them they killed their mother?"
Color drained from her face.
"I... didn't mean—"
"You did."
His voice never rose.
Which somehow made it far more frightening.
"I buried my wife eight months ago."
A pause.
"And every single day since then my daughters have blamed themselves because of something you deliberately told them."
Several executives quietly stood from nearby tables.
No one wanted to interrupt.
Everyone wanted to hear.
Daniel looked at security.
"Escort Miss Harper to Conference Room A."
She stepped backward.
"You can't do this."
"I already have."
