Chapter 2 – The Recording

The restaurant was silent.
The nanny, Victoria, forced a smile.
"I'm not sure what you mean, Mr. Whitmore."
Daniel didn't lower his phone.
"You told my daughters their mother left because they were too noisy."
Victoria laughed nervously.
"They're confused. They've been through trauma."
Maya knelt beside the girls and gently signed,
Can you tell Daddy the truth?
The oldest triplet slowly nodded.
Her small hands trembled.
Nanny locked us in the playroom.
The second girl signed,
She said good girls stay silent.
The youngest added,
She said Mommy went away because we cried too much.
Daniel's face went completely still.
Not angry.
Heartbroken.
Victoria quickly interrupted.
"They're making stories up."
Just then, Maya noticed the oldest girl reaching into her tiny cardigan pocket.
She pulled out a small voice recorder.
"I found it," Maya whispered.
Daniel stared.
"My wife bought those."
The little girl nodded and signed,
Mommy said press the red button if you're scared.
Daniel pressed PLAY.
Victoria's voice filled the restaurant.
"If you keep talking, your daddy will leave too."
"You made enough noise to make your mother sick."
"Broken little girls don't deserve hugs."
The recording continued.
The entire dining room listened.
Several guests covered their mouths.
One woman quietly began crying.
Victoria dropped the silver key card onto the marble floor.
"I can explain..."
Daniel finally spoke.
"No."
"You've explained enough."
Hotel security arrived within minutes.
Victoria was escorted from the building while the recording continued playing in Daniel's shaking hand.
The three girls watched silently.
