Chapter 8 - Dinner with the Carters

The dining room table groaned under the weight of roasted chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans smothered in bacon, and Elena’s pound cake sitting proudly in the center.

The atmosphere, however, was thick enough to cut with a butcher’s knife.

Henry Carter sat at the head of the table, carving a thick slice of chicken with a knife that looked entirely too sharp for comfort. He glared across the table at Dominic, who sat calmly next to Sophia, cutting his meat with precise, elegant movements.

"So, Moretti," Henry grunted, dropping a piece of chicken onto his plate with a heavy thud. "You’re in finance, my daughter says. Wall Street types. What do you actually do? Speculate on other people’s hard work?"

Sophia kicked Henry under the table, but her father didn't even flinch.

Dominic calmly set his fork down, wiped his mouth with a linen napkin, and looked directly into Henry’s hostile eyes.

"I build things, Henry," Dominic said smoothly. "And occasionally, I tear down things that were built on rotten foundations."

Henry grunted, narrowing his eyes. "Sounds like a fancy way of saying you’re a vulture."

"Dad!" Sophia hissed, her face burning crimson. "Stop it!"

"No, it's fine, Sophia," Dominic said, his voice level and dangerously calm. He leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table. "Henry, I understand why you’re suspicious. You’ve spent your entire life working sixty-hour weeks on a farm where every dollar earned is paid for in sweat and blood. You look at a man like me, and you see a parasite."

Henry didn't deny it. He just stared back.

"The difference between us," Dominic continued, his voice dropping into that hypnotic, lethal quiet, "is that you protect your family by building fences to keep the world out. I protect mine by owning the ground they walk on so nobody can ever hurt them."

The dining room went dead silent. Even Lily stopped chewing her green beans, sensing the shift in the air.

Henry stared at Dominic for ten long seconds. The anger in the older man’s eyes slowly flickered, replaced by a grudging, profound realization. He saw the cold, unyielding steel beneath Dominic’s polished exterior—and he knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that this man was entirely capable of leveling mountains to protect whatever he set his sights on.

Henry slowly picked up his water glass, took a long drink, and set it back down.

"Pass the potatoes, Moretti," Henry muttered.

Emma let out a loud, explosive snort of laughter into her napkin, and the tension in the room shattered like glass.
