Chapter 3 - The East Pier Slaughterhouse

The rain had turned from a steady downpour into a relentless, icy mist by the time our three black sedans rolled onto the rusted concrete of the east pier.
The old slaughterhouse loomed out of the harbor fog like a skeletal monolith of rotting wood and corrugated iron. Decades ago, it had been a bustling hub of meatpacking; now, it was a ghost zone where the city's underworld stored contraband, smuggled goods, and, apparently, inconvenient witnesses.
I carried Elena in my arms, keeping her head tucked against my shoulder so she wouldn't see the men drawing their submachine guns in the back seat. Bruno whimpered softly beneath her jacket, sensing the electric, violent tension in the air.
"Vittorio," I said, my voice cold as ice as Enzo hauled our captive out of the lead car and shoved him toward the rotting wooden loading dock. "You lead the way. One wrong step, and your brains will decorate this concrete before your feet hit the ground."
"I'm going, I'm going," Vittorio whimpered, his face swollen and bruised from Enzo's initial strike. He limped up the wooden ramp, his boots clicking frantically against the wet planks.
We slipped through a side service door that smelled heavily of bleach, old blood, and damp salt. The interior was pitch black, save for the weak beam of Enzo’s tactical flashlight cutting through the floating dust motes.
We climbed three flights of metal stairs, the grating groaning under our boots.
At the end of a long, narrow hallway lined with rusted meat hooks, a heavy steel door stood ajar. A single sliver of yellow light spilled out onto the floor.
"In there," Vittorio whispered, pointing a trembling finger. "That's the refrigeration office. That's where she is."
I set Elena down gently behind me, crouching beside her. "Stay right here with Enzo. Do not move, no matter what you hear."
She nodded solemnly, her small hands tightly gripping Bruno's paws.
I signaled to two of my men. On my count of three, we breached the door.
I kicked it open with a heavy boot, pistol raised and sweeping the room.
The office was small, dominated by an old metal desk, a flickering fluorescent overhead light, and a heavy walk-in freezer door in the back corner. Bound to a wooden chair in the center of the room was a woman with dark hair identical to Elena's, her mouth taped shut with silver duct tape, her eyes wide with sheer, unadulterated terror.
"Mommy!"
Before I could stop her, Elena broke past Enzo's reach, sprinting into the room and throwing her small arms around the woman's waist.
The woman let out a muffled, desperate cry behind the tape, her body shuddering as she tried to pull her daughter close despite being tightly bound to the chair.
I stepped forward, holstering my weapon, and ripped the duct tape from her mouth.
"Clara O'Shea?" I asked gently.
The woman gasped for air, her chest heaving as she looked up at me with wild, disbelieving eyes. "Who... who are you? How did Elena find you?"
May you like
"She hired me," I said simply, pulling a pocketknife from my jacket and slicing through the heavy zip-ties binding her wrists and ankles to the chair. "And payment has already been rendered in the form of a very brave black puppy."
Clara collapsed forward, sobbing uncontrollably as she pulled Elena into a fierce, suffocating embrace, burying her face in her daughter's damp hair.
