Chapter 2 – The Secret Behind Four Empty Coffins

Richard could barely breathe.

"They... are mine?"

Lena nodded through tears.

"Yes, sir."

The four boys shrank together, frightened by the tension in the room.

Richard slowly knelt until he was eye level with them.

"What are your names?"

The oldest answered cautiously.

"Lucas."

"I'm Liam," said the second.

"Noah," whispered the third.

The smallest clutched his spoon.

"I'm Eli."

Richard's heart shattered.

He had imagined saying those names thousands of times—but never like this.

He looked back at Lena.

"How?"

She took a shaky breath.

"The night your wife died... I worked in the maternity ward."

Richard stared silently.

"The babies were born alive."

"What?"

"The doctors saved all four."

His hands began to shake.

"But my mother said—"

"Mrs. Evelyn Hail paid the hospital administrator and one corrupt doctor."

Lena reached into her apron and removed an old envelope.

"I've carried this for five years."

Inside were copies of birth records.

Each listed Richard Hail as the father.

Each recorded the babies as healthy at birth.

"My grandmother raised them in secret," Lena whispered.

"She couldn't bear to leave them in an orphanage."

"When she passed away three months ago, I brought them here."

"You brought them... home."

"I didn't know where else they belonged."

Richard looked at the boys again.

His sons.

Alive.

Hungry.

Growing up believing no one wanted them.

He buried his face in his hands and cried harder than he had the day Clara died.

For five years, he had mourned children who had never been dead.

Someone had stolen those years from all of them.
