PART 4 — One Year Later

The next Christmas arrived wrapped in quiet snow.
The Carter case had become national news.
The investigation proved that Daniel Carter had discovered his wife and her brother stealing from his company.
When he threatened to expose them, they staged the boating accident.
Fearing the twins had overheard too much, Hannah kept them isolated before they escaped through a basement window eleven days before Ethan found them behind the dumpster.
Hannah and Victor were both convicted and sentenced to life in prison.
The twins entered foster care briefly.
But they never stayed there long.
Months later, Ethan and Noah officially welcomed Lily and Lucy into their family.
The adoption hearing was held just before Christmas.
Judge Wilson smiled.
"Is anyone here opposed to this adoption?"
No one spoke.
Lily squeezed Ethan's hand.
"Dad?"
It was the first time she had ever called him that.
Ethan couldn't answer immediately.
His eyes filled with tears.
Finally he whispered,
"I've been waiting a long time to hear that."
That Christmas Eve, four stockings hung above the fireplace instead of two.
Noah helped Lucy place the star on top of the tree while Lily curled beside Ethan with a storybook.
Outside, snow quietly covered the streets where fear had once followed two frightened little girls.
Inside, they finally understood what family truly meant.
Not the people who gave you life.
The people who chose to protect it.

Sometimes the greatest Christmas miracle isn't being found.
It's finally finding home.
