Chapter 6 - The Dawn on the Horizon

Three weeks later, the morning sun finally broke through the gray Texas clouds, casting a warm, golden light across the courtyard of St. Jude Medical Center.
Inside Room 412, the room was filled with soft pink balloons, get-well cards from classmates, and a fresh vase of sunflowers.
Sophie sat propped up against a pile of pillows, wearing her favorite pink pajamas, her cheeks glowing with healthy color once again. Her hair was brushed, and her eyes—once sunken and shadowed with fear—shone with bright, childish life.
Alejandro sat on the edge of the mattress, carefully cutting up a pancake on a plastic breakfast tray, while Eleanor sat in the corner armchair, reading a book of fairy tales.
The door opened, and Dr. Harris stepped in, checking Sophie’s chart with a wide, relieved smile.
“Well, Mr. Rivers,” Dr. Harris said cheerfully, pressing his stethoscope against Sophie’s back. “Lungs sound completely clear. Heart rate is strong and steady. This young lady is officially ready to check out and go home.”
Sophie’s face lit up with a brilliant, gap-toothed smile.
“Can I sleep in my own bed tonight, Dad?” she asked eagerly.
“Every single night, princess,” Alejandro said, leaning down to kiss the top of her head, his heart swelling with a profound, overwhelming wave of peace. “And nobody is ever going to bother you again. I promise.”
Later that afternoon, as they pulled up to the house in North Dallas, Alejandro noticed something different.
The security cameras had been upgraded. The locks had been changed. The ghost of Valerie’s presence had been scrubbed entirely from the walls, replaced by a deep, immovable sense of security.
Inside the living room, Sophie ran straight to her old pink blanket draped over the sofa, clutching it tightly to her chest with a happy sigh.
Alejandro stood in the center of the foyer, looking up the grand staircase.
Eleanor walked up beside him, resting a comforting hand on his shoulder.

“She’s home, Alejandro,” Eleanor said softly.
“Yeah, Mom,” Alejandro replied, watching Sophie laugh as she chased a stray beam of sunlight across the hardwood floor. “We’re finally home.”
