Chapter 6 - The Cleansing of the Plaza

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel looked completely different on Friday evening. The stifling, arrogant air of the Winter Solstice Gala was gone, replaced by a warm, vibrant energy that filled the massive space from floor to ceiling.

Eleanor Vance had purchased the entire hotel property through her newly consolidated conglomerate, Vance Global Maritime. For her first official act as owner, she didn't host a high-society fundraiser or an exclusive political dinner. Instead, she threw a massive, city-wide celebration for the entire working-class staff of the metropolitan area—the caterers, the janitors, the hotel maids, the bus drivers, and their families.

The long tables were covered in immaculate linen, but instead of tiny portions of truffles and caviar, they were stacked with massive, beautifully prepared family feasts—roasted chickens, fresh artisan bread, towering chocolate cakes, and every kind of sweet treat a child could dream of.

The city's most prominent citizens—the mayor, the judges, the billionaire investors who had stood by and watched Victoria push a child six days ago—stood behind the service stations. Eleanor had legally compelled them to attend as a condition for renewing their corporate tax abatements and real estate development permits. They wore white aprons, their hands trembling as they filled water glasses and carried trays for the very people they had spent their lives ignoring.

Eleanor sat at the massive center table, surrounded by her top corporate executives and the legal team that had helped her execute the takeover. She wore a simple, elegant dark green dress, her expression relaxed and filled with a serene, permanent peace.

Lily sat right beside her, wearing a brand-new, beautiful pink dress with small silver stars embroidered along the hemline. She was laughing happily, eating a massive slice of strawberry shortcake, completely surrounded by dozens of other children who were playing and running through the open spaces of the ballroom.

"Mommy, look!" Lily pointed toward the main entrance. "The big tree has our names on it!"

Eleanor looked up at the towering Christmas tree in the corner. Beneath the sparkling white lights hung a massive, beautiful silver plaque bearing the logo of the Vance Maritime Foundation—a charity that had just been endowed with $100 million to provide housing and education for the children of working-class families across the state.

Julian Cross stepped up behind Eleanor's chair, holding a glass of sparkling water. "The transition is 100% complete, Eleanor. The market opened this morning with Vance Global trading at an all-time high. The institutional investors are fully aligned with your new corporate mandate."

"Thank you, Julian," Eleanor smiled, looking around the room. "For three years, I thought the only way to protect my daughter was to stay hidden, to keep our heads down, and to accept the crumbs that people like Victoria Sterling threw at us. I was wrong."

She reached down, taking Lily’s small hand in hers, feeling the steady, warm rhythm of her daughter’s pulse.

"Silence doesn't protect anyone," Eleanor continued softly, her voice filled with a deep, unbreakable conviction. "It only teaches the people at the top that they can get away with cruelty. But from this day forward, my daughter will never have to look at a table and wonder if she belongs there. We built the foundation, and every single seat in this room is the good table."
