Epilogue: Christmas, One Year Later

A year later, snow fell gently across Oakwood Lane once again.

Chloe, now healthy and smiling, stood beside Officer Megan and Jason beneath a newly planted maple tree in the town memorial garden.

A small bronze plaque rested beneath it.

DAVID CARTER

"A loving father who never stopped trying to come home."

Jason knelt beside Chloe.

"Your dad kept his promise," he said softly.

She looked up.

"He did?"

Jason smiled.

"He never stopped coming back to you."

Chloe carefully hung her father's old Christmas stocking on one of the tree's lower branches.

Then she whispered toward the snowy sky,

"I knew you didn't leave me."

Around them, neighbors who had once watched from behind their curtains now stood together holding candles instead of phones.

Some lessons arrive too late to change the past.

But they can still change the people who remain.

The End.
