Chapter 2 - The Secrets of the Crypt

The smell hit me first.
It wasn't dust or old furniture. It was the sharp, sour stench of spoiled food, human waste, and chemical disinfectants.
I reached inside the doorway, flicked the light switch, and the harsh yellow glare of an overhead bulb illuminated a space that made my knees buckle.
This wasn't a storage room. It was a makeshift prison cell.
The windows were covered from the inside with thick wooden boards and black blackout curtains, sealing out every ray of natural sunlight. In the center of the room stood a metal hospital cot with leather restraints dangling from the frame. Against the far wall were stacked dozens of empty prescription pill bottles, heavy-duty sedatives, and antipsychotics—medications that neither Elena nor I had ever been prescribed by a doctor.
And on the floor, scattered across a filthy mattress, were legal documents, bank statements, and photo albums.
My hands shaking uncontrollably, I walked over to the desk in the corner and picked up the top folder. The title on the cover made my breath catch in my throat: Vance Family Trust & Asset Liquidation.
I opened it and began to read. Page after page revealed a nightmare I could never have imagined.
Elena hadn't just been living a quiet suburban life with me. For the past three years, she had been systematically draining our joint savings, taking out secret high-interest loans against our home, and forging my signature on multi-million-dollar asset transfers. But that wasn't even the most terrifying part.
Buried deeper in the file was a psychiatric evaluation report dated four years ago—before we met—diagnosing Elena with severe dissociative identity disorder and Munchausen syndrome by proxy, detailing a history of psychological manipulation and child endangerment from a previous marriage that had been completely erased under a legal name change.
She hadn't hidden her past from me by accident. She had hunted me down.
Beneath the financial folders sat a small, locked metal lockbox. Driven by a cold, desperate fury, I grabbed a heavy iron paperweight from the desk and smashed the lock until the lid popped open.
Inside lay a collection of burner phones, cash, airline tickets to Zurich dated for yesterday morning, and a handwritten diary with Elena’s looping, manic handwriting scrawled across the pages.
I opened it to the most recent entry:
“Mark is coming back from his business trip in two days. The kids are getting too smart, especially Lily. If he finds out I liquidated the accounts to pay off my debts, everything falls apart. I have to make it look like an accident. I locked them in the west wing, turned off the pantry access, and left the sedatives in the kitchen. Once Mark arrives, I’ll be long gone across the Atlantic. Let him deal with the wreckage.”

The diary slipped from my fingers, fluttering down onto the concrete floor.
My wife—the woman I had loved, the mother of my children—had deliberately planned to starve our kids and frame me for their deaths before fleeing the country with every cent I had earned.
