CHAPTER 3: THE TRUTH COMES OUT
The next morning, Alejandro contacted his attorney.
Then he called Child Protective Services.
Then he called the police.
Fernanda laughed when the officers arrived.
"This is ridiculous," she said.
"They were playing."
Alejandro simply handed over the footage.
The laughter disappeared.
The investigators watched every minute.
The locked door.
The repeated plea
s.
The neglect.
The threats.
By afternoon, more truths began surfacing.
The housekeeper quietly admitted she had witnessed Fernanda insulting Lucía for months.
A nanny confessed she had quit because Fernanda frequently punished the children whenever Alejandro traveled.
Even the gardener reported hearing Diego crying outside on several occasions.
One by one, the pieces came together.
The woman Alejandro thought he married did not exist.
It had been an act.
A performance.
A carefully crafted mask.
That evening, Fernanda finally lost control.
"You always loved Mariana more than me!"
She screamed the words across the living room.
"You treated those children like they were made of glass!"
Alejandro looked at her with complete calm.
"No."
His voice was steady.
"I treated them like they were my children."
For the first time, Fernanda had no response.
The divorce papers were filed within days.
A restraining order followed shortly after.
And as she was escorted from the property, Lucía stood quietly beside her father.
Fernanda glanced back one final time.
Expecting fear.
Expecting tears.
Instead she saw something else.
The children no longer looked afraid.

Because they finally knew someone was protecting them.
And that terrified her far more than any courtroom ever could.
