Chapter 5: The Scholarship
The following spring, the university announced something unexpected.
The Board of Trustees invited Lily to campus once again.
This time, not as a speaker.
As an honored guest.
The university president stood behind the podium.
"We failed many students."
"We cannot erase that failure."
"But we can decide who we become afterward."
He turned toward Lily.
"In recognition of extraordinary courage, Bradley University is establishing the Lily Carter Scholarship for students who demonstrate integrity, compassion, and the courage to protect others."
The audience rose in applause.
Lily shook her head in disbelief.
"This shouldn't be named after me."
The president smiled.
"It already is."
She accepted the plaque with trembling hands.
Not because she enjoyed attention.
But because she understood what it represented.
