Chapter 5 - Dawn at Last

Three days later, the morning sun rose over a world that finally felt right.
The federal indictment against Ryan, Henderson, and the rest of their trafficking syndicate made front-page news across the state. The properties were seized, the underground network dismantled, and every criminal involved was locked behind bars with no chance of bail.
At my home, the kitchen was filled with the warm, comforting smell of pancakes and coffee.
Evan sat at the dining table, happily coloring in a new book while wearing a brand-new blue hoodie that matched mine. Across from him sat Daniel, looking healthier with every passing hour, color returning to his cheeks as he laughed at a silly joke Evan had just told.
There were still scars—deep ones, physical and emotional—that would take years of healing. But we had time. We had each other.
There was a soft knock at the front door.
I walked over and pulled it open. Standing on the porch was a local social worker accompanied by family court paperwork, but more importantly, standing beside her was a caseworker confirming that permanent legal guardianship of Evan had officially been transferred to Daniel and me.

“Welcome home, family,” I whispered, looking back toward the kitchen where Daniel and his son were smiling, completely unburdened by fear for the first time in their lives.
The badge on my chest felt a little lighter. The ghost from the past had finally come home, and the door to our future was wide open.
