Chapter 4 - The Midnight Arrival

At 3:45 AM, the quiet stillness of the Queens residential street was broken by a low, rhythmic purr of heavy engines.
Down the narrow block, one by one, four black Mercedes-Maybach sedans glided silently past the sleeping houses, their high-end LED headlights switched off to avoid drawing attention. They parked in a flawless, military-style echelon formation directly outside Daniel’s modest duplex, occupying every available inch of curb space.
Inside the lead vehicle, a silver-haired man in an impeccably tailored Brioni suit sat upright, staring up at the peeling paint of the front porch. His face was carved from granite, lined with age, authority, and an unyielding, terrifying resolve.
This was Julian Sterling—one of the wealthiest, most ruthless shipping and industrial magnates on the global market. And for the past seventy-two hours, he had been a man at the absolute edge of a breakdown.
The rear door of the sedan opened, and a younger man stepped out into the damp night air, holding an encrypted tablet. He jogged up the concrete walkway of Daniel’s house and rapped his knuckles against the wooden door.
Knock. Knock. Knock.
Inside, Daniel jolted awake instantly. Years of financial stress and single-parenthood had wired his nervous system to react to any disturbance. He sat up on the living room recliner where he had been dozing, his heart hammering against his ribs.
Knock. Knock.
Daniel slipped quietly past the sleeping form of Claire on the couch, making sure not to wake her. He crept to the front door, flipped the deadbolt, and pulled it open by six inches, keeping the security chain latched.
Standing on his porch was a man in an expensive suit, wearing an earpiece, looking down at him with an expression of intense urgency.
“Mr. Daniel Carter?” the man asked, his voice low and controlled.
“Yeah. Who are you? What the hell do you want at four in the morning?” Daniel whispered fiercely, glancing nervously down the hallway to make sure Emma hadn't woken up.
The man didn't answer verbally. Instead, he raised his tablet toward the crack in the door and pressed a button.
The screen lit up, projecting a live video feed from the black sedan parked at the curb.
The rear window of the Maybach rolled down smoothly. In the dim interior lighting, the silver-haired patriarch, Julian Sterling, looked directly into the camera lens, fixing his piercing, watery blue eyes on Daniel.
“Mr. Carter,” Julian Sterling’s deep, resonant voice echoed softly through the tablet speaker. “Open your front door. My sister is inside your house. And I believe it is time we had a conversation.”
Daniel froze. His brain stalled.
May you like
Sister?
He looked back over his shoulder toward the living room couch, where Claire was currently sleeping under Emma’s puppy-printed blanket.
