Chapter 7 - The Grand Recital

Six months later, the cultural arts center of Boston was packed to capacity.

The marquee outside shone brightly in the crisp evening air: THE BENNETT-VALE FOUNDATION PRESENTS: THE FALLING STAR RECITAL, FEATURING THE SOUTH BOSTON YOUTH DANCE ACADEMY.

Inside, the auditorium was a sea of velvet seats, filled not with snobbish socialites looking to mock the working class, but with families, children, and supporters from every walk of life.

From my seat in the center box next to Eleanor and Adrian, I watched the stage with a heart fit to burst.

The curtains parted, revealing a stage bathed in soft blue light. At the center stood twelve little girls in pale-blue dresses—and right at the front, leading the choreography with absolute grace and precision, was my daughter, Lucia.

The orchestra began to play. Not a modern pop remix, but the pure, timeless notes of The Star of the North.

As Lucia executed the falling star with breathtaking perfection, the entire audience rose to their feet in a thunderous, roaring standing ovation.

Eleanor dabbed at her eyes with a lace handkerchief, smiling proudly, while Adrian leaned over, his arm resting gently around my shoulders, pressing a soft kiss to the top of my head.

“Your mother would have been so proud of you, Elena,” Adrian whispered against my hair.

“She is proud,” I whispered back, looking down at the stage where Lucia was bowing to the cheering crowd, her smile radiant and completely free of fear. “She’s dancing right alongside us.”

When the curtain fell, and the house lights came up, we walked backstage to congratulate our little star.

Lucia ran into my arms, nearly knocking me over, laughing as she held up a massive bouquet of white roses.

“Did you see me, Mama? Did you see the turn?”

“I saw every single step, my love,” I laughed, hugging her tight.

Adrian knelt down beside her, handing her a small, beautifully wrapped box. “And for the star of the show... a very special opening-night gift.”

Lucia ripped open the wrapping to reveal a delicate silver music box that played the exact same lullaby. Her eyes went wide with pure joy.

“It’s just like Mama’s!” she gasped.

“It’s yours now,” Adrian smiled, looking up from Lucia to meet my eyes across the small space. “To make sure you never forget where you came from, and how far your own two feet can take you.”
