Chapter 2: Rosa’s Secret

The flashing police lights painted the walls red and blue.

For a moment, neither Rosa nor I moved.

Then she took a slow breath.

“Mr. Calloway,” she said quietly, “you need to trust me.”

The front door burst open downstairs.

Voices echoed through the mansion.

“Police! Nobody move!”

My pulse hammered.

“Rosa, what is happening?”

She handed me another folder.

Inside were hundreds of pages of financial records.

Transfers.

Wire receipts.

Offshore accounts.

Every one connected to Vanessa.

And another name appeared over and over.

Harold Bennett.

My old friend.

The man who had invited me to dinner.

The man who had never planned to see me alive again.

“They stole everything,” Rosa said. “But they were greedy. Greedy people always keep records.”

Heavy footsteps climbed the staircase.

The guest-room door swung open.

Three detectives entered.

Behind them stood a tall federal investigator.

He looked directly at Rosa.

“Mrs. Martinez?”

Rosa nodded.

The investigator removed his badge.

“Thank you. We’ve been trying to find this evidence for eleven months.”

I stared at her.

“What?”

The investigator turned to me.

“Mr. Calloway, your housekeeper has been secretly cooperating with our financial crimes division.”

My knees nearly gave out.

Rosa lowered her eyes.

“I’m sorry I never told you.”

“You’re working with the government?”

“For almost a year.”

The room fell silent.

Then the investigator smiled.

“Your housekeeper may have just solved the largest corporate theft case in Florida.”
