Chapter 5 - Dawn Over Chicago

The morning sun broke over the Chicago skyline, burning away the midnight fog and revealing a city about to experience an earthquake of accountability.

Inside the high-security federal holding facility downtown, Arthur Vance, Julian Thorne, and Marcus Croft sat across from each other in a windowless interrogation room, their expressions turning from arrogant defiance to sheer panic as federal marshals slid copies of intercepted financial wires and medical tox-screens across the table.

The empire they had built on intimidation and backroom murder was crumbling in real-time. By noon, federal agents had seized every asset belonging to Thorne-Vance Global, and warrants were issued for executive arrests across the board.

Back in Bridgeport, the kitchen was filled with the warm smell of fresh tea and buttered toast.

Daniel Moretti sat at the small wooden table, sharing breakfast with Eleanor and Annie. A team of top-tier medical specialists had already visited Eleanor an hour earlier, ensuring her health condition was properly diagnosed and treated with the best care money could buy—care that Daniel was personally underwriting, not out of charity, but out of an unpayable debt of honor.

Annie sat swinging her legs beneath her chair, dipping a piece of toast into her tea.

“You’re going to be okay now, Grandma,” Annie said softly, looking up with her wide, honest eyes.

Eleanor smiled, her eyes bright with unshed tears, as she reached out to stroke her granddaughter’s hair.

Daniel Moretti raised his teacup, looking at the little girl who had chosen compassion over convenience when the rest of the world looked away. He knew that by sunset, the entire city of Chicago would learn whose child had anchored him to life—and that three powerful families had finally met their match in a seven-year-old girl with an oversized blue coat.
