Chapter 4 - Unraveling the Web

By dawn, the storm had cleared, leaving behind a crisp, brilliant Texas morning that mocked the dark secrets uncovered overnight.

I sat in my massive home office on the third floor of the estate, sipping black coffee while reviewing the digital dossier Marcus had just laid across my mahogany desk.

“You were right about the ring, sir,” Marcus reported, standing at attention beside the desk. “We ran the serial numbers and the custom smithing marks through our private registry. The ring belonged to your brother, Julian. But Julian passed away five years ago in a car accident in Seattle.”

I stared at the paperwork. “And Elena?”

“Elena Vance. She was Julian’s second wife—or rather, his widow,” Marcus continued, flipping to a financial audit. “After Julian died, Julian’s stepbrother from a previous marriage, a ruthless real estate developer named Victor Vance—who legally changed his surname to absorb the family trusts—took control of the estate. He left Elena destitute, stripped her of her inheritance, and kept her under virtual house arrest in a property near Fort Worth.”

My hands gripped the edges of the desk so hard my knuckles turned white. “Victor. That piece of human garbage.”

“It gets worse, Mr. Vaughn,” Marcus said grimly, sliding a photograph forward. “Victor didn't just want the money. When Elena became pregnant—legitimately carrying the true heir to the Vaughn bloodline—Victor realized that child would legally inherit fifty-one percent of the original family trust when they turned eighteen. Last night, our traffic camera analysis picked up a black SUV tailing Elena as she escaped her estate on foot. The man driving that SUV was Victor’s personal enforcer.”

The pieces of the puzzle clicked together with terrifying clarity.

She wasn't just running from a bad marriage. She was running for her life, and for the life of her unborn child, trying desperately to protect the true bloodline from a monster who had stolen our family name.

At that moment, the oak office door clicked open.

I looked up. Lily stood in the doorway, wearing a clean pink dress Mrs. Gable must have found for her, holding her stuffed rabbit with both hands. Her big brown eyes looked up at me timidly.

“Mr. Richard?” she whispered.

My stern, ice-cold demeanor melted instantly. I stood up from my desk and walked over to her, crouching down.

“Good morning, Lily. Did you sleep okay?”

She nodded. “Mommy’s nurse said I can see my baby brother in the glass box soon. Is mommy awake yet?”

“Not yet, sweetheart. But she’s resting, and she’s safe,” I said, gently touching her shoulder. “Would you like to come with me to see your baby brother first?”

May you like

A bright, beautiful smile broke across Lily’s face—a smile that chased away the shadows of the previous night entirely. “Can I really?”

“Of course,” I said, offering her my hand. “Let’s go introduce him to his new family.”
