Chapter 4 - The Unseen Ledger

Within twenty minutes, the wailing sirens of unmarked federal vehicles pierced the night air, converging on the Long Island City warehouse from three different directions.

Through the binoculars, Daniel watched the swift, clinical execution of the raid. Federal agents poured out of black SUVs, breaching the loading bay doors and securing the perimeter before Julian Thorne or Kevin Vance had even realized their digital paper trail had been weaponized against them.

Thorne was hauled out in handcuffs, his expensive Italian suit getting soaked in the puddles of the industrial yard, his face contorted in a mixture of blind panic and impotent rage as cameras flashed from nowhere.

Daniel watched the spectacle with a cold, detached satisfaction. But his mind was already miles away, tracking a different set of coordinates entirely.

"The off-the-books errand," Frank prompted, keeping his eyes on the unfolding chaos outside. "You wanted something handled?"

"St. Jude’s Pediatric Center," Daniel said, his voice steady. "I want a medical courier dispatched there immediately. Not tomorrow morning. Right now."

Frank glanced over, surprised. "For Lily Santos?"

"For Lily Santos," Daniel confirmed. "I want her entire medical debt cleared in full—account balanced to zero, all specialty pharmacy restrictions lifted, and a three-month supply of the exact respiratory biologics she needs delivered directly to their apartment, courtesy of a specialized medical transport team. No paperwork, no waiting periods, no bureaucratic red tape."

Frank let out a low whistle. "That’s going to run well over thirty grand out-of-pocket, boss. Not to mention cutting through hospital compliance red tape at midnight."

"Then write the check and tell them Daniel Foster is personally underwriting the account," Daniel said, his tone leaving zero room for argument. "And make sure the delivery includes proper refrigeration units so the medication doesn't sit out for a single second."

"Done," Frank nodded, pulling out his encrypted comms device to dispatch the logistics team. "What about Maya? She’s going to know this didn't come from a charity fund."

Daniel stared out the windshield at the flashing red and blue lights reflecting off the wet pavement.

"She doesn't need to know tonight," Daniel said quietly. "Let her sleep without suffocating from panic for the first time in months."
