Chapter 2 - The House of Glass

By midnight, the mansion in Buckhead was entirely silent, save for the hum of the climate-control system and the faint, rhythmic sound of little Liam’s breathing in the guest suite upstairs.

Madeline had refused to put him back in the nursery. Cynthia had redecorated the nursery six months ago, turning it into a playroom for Austin, dumping Liam’s clothes into black trash bags in the laundry room. When Madeline found those bags, something inside her had snapped completely—not into pieces, but into cold, unbreakable steel.

She sat at her mahogany desk in the home office, the desk she had used to draft the initial merger documents for Caldwell Freight before handing the reins to Jeffrey.

On the screen before her, the financial logs were open.

For two years, Jeffrey had sent her monthly reports showing steady growth, modest reinvestment, and careful overhead control. But tonight, using her master administrator credentials—credentials Jeffrey had foolishly forgotten she never relinquished—she pulled the raw banking data from the primary corporate accounts.

Her breath hitched.

Eighty-five thousand dollars wired last month to an upscale boutique in Buckhead under Cynthia’s name. A lease payment for a luxury penthouse in Midtown paid out of corporate reserve funds. Even worse, her mother-in-law’s lavish medical bills, private club memberships, and luxury vacations were being written off as corporate operational expenses.

Jeffrey hadn't just replaced her as a wife; he had been systematically looting the very company she had built, treating her sweat and blood as a bottomless ATM to fund his mistress and his family’s parasitic lifestyle.

A soft knock sounded at the office door. It creaked open, revealing Jeffrey in his silk pajamas, looking uneasy.

“Madeline?” he whispered, glancing down the dark hallway. “Can we talk? You can’t just... march in here and act like nothing happened.”

Madeline didn't look up from her monitor. “Close the door, Jeffrey.”

He hesitated, then stepped inside, clicking the heavy oak door shut behind him. “Look, I know how it looked downstairs. Cynthia staying here... it was temporary. Austin’s mother had some personal issues, and—”

“Cynthia is Austin’s mother, Jeffrey,” Madeline interrupted smoothly, finally raising her eyes to meet his. “Let’s skip the amateur hour lies. I’ve seen the birth certificate registry. I saw the wire transfers. You bought her a Mercedes with corporate capital last November while I was working sixteen-hour days in Frankfurt.”

Jeffrey’s face drained of color. He gripped the back of the guest chair, his knuckles turning white. “You... how did you—”

“I built this company, Jeffrey. Every brick, every contract, every compliance protocol. You were the face they put on the magazine covers because you looked good in a Brioni suit, but the legal architecture of Caldwell Freight has my signature on every foundational document.” Madeline stood up, walking slowly around the desk until she was standing just inches from him.

He towered over her by half a foot, but for the first time in their fifteen-year relationship, Jeffrey looked terrified.

“What do you want?” he stammered, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. “A divorce settlement? You want the house? Fine. We can negotiate quietly. Don't ruin the company. If the board finds out about corporate misuse of funds, the upcoming public offering will collapse—”

“The public offering?” Madeline let out a low, humorless laugh. “Jeffrey, the public offering was dead the moment you decided to neglect my son, let your mother treat him like an animal, and invite a parasite into my home.”

She lifted her phone, letting the screen glow in the dim light between them.

“Tomorrow morning at nine o’clock, my legal team from London—along with federal investigators specializing in corporate fraud—will be walking through the front lobby of Caldwell Freight. And you won’t even be allowed past the security turnstiles.”

May you like

Jeffrey lunged forward, his hand shooting out to grab her wrist. “You wouldn't dare. You’ll destroy everything we built!”

Before his fingers could graze her skin, the office door swung wide open with a violent crash.
