Chapter 3 - The Toast and the Fall

"We need champagne," Cassandra declared, a sudden, feverish energy replacing her earlier shock. "We need to toast the best dancer in this room."

The head butler, Thomas Bell, immediately signaled a junior waiter standing near the service pantry.

Thomas Bell was an institution within the DeLuca dynasty. For thirty-two years, he had served the family with unyielding devotion. He had taught Julian how to knot his first silk tie, bandaged his scraped knees when he fell from riding horses, and stood silently by his father’s freshly dug grave when Julian was a boy too young to understand why grown men wept. With his immaculate silver hair, tailored black morning coat, and piercing, calm blue eyes, Thomas belonged to the fabric of the estate as completely as the grand stone staircase or the iron gates outside.

A silver tray materialized, bearing two crystal champagne flutes and a small, elegant juice glass filled with chilled apple cider for Lily.

At Cassandra’s direct request, Nora carried the tray across the remaining expanse of the ballroom to the head table. Her hands were ice-cold against the silver rim.

Cassandra picked up one flute. Julian stepped forward, his gaze boring into Nora as he reached out and took the second flute. Lily accepted the apple cider with both hands, clutching it like a precious treasure.

"To the only dancer in this room brave enough to be truly happy," Cassandra toasted, her voice ringing out across the quieted tables.

The surrounding guests raised their glasses in agreement, murmuring their approval.

Cassandra brought the crystal flute to her lips and took a long, elegant sip.

For one single, suspended second, nothing happened.

Then, Cassandra’s fingers abruptly went slack.

The crystal flute slipped from her grip, striking the hard marble floor and shattering into a thousand glittering shards right at Nora’s bare feet.

Cassandra’s entire body went rigid as a board. Her dark eyes dilated instantly, widening not with fear, but with a profound, terrifying bewilderment, as if the physical world had suddenly fractured beyond her control. Her lips parted, though no words came out—only a faint, rasping breath.

Then her knees buckled.

Julian moved with the speed of a striking predator, catching Cassandra around the waist before her head could strike the marble floor.

"Cassandra!" Julian roared.

The ballroom erupted into instant, chaotic pandemonium. Heavy mahogany chairs scraped violently against the floorboards. Several women shrieked in horror. Within three seconds, four private security guards appeared from the side exits, sealing the doors.

Julian lowered Cassandra gently onto the white stone, his face draining of all color. Her skin had turned an alarming, translucent grey, and her pulse was racing erratically beneath his fingers. He shouted for the estate medic, his voice raw, jagged, and terrifying enough to freeze the panicked crowd in their tracks.

Nora reacted purely on instinct. She scooped Lily up into her arms, pulling the child’s face tightly against her shoulder to shield her from the unfolding nightmare.

As Nora backed away toward the shadows of the velvet drapes near the service pantry, her eyes swept across the room.

And she saw him.

Standing half-hidden in the shadows beside the service door was Thomas Bell.

For the first time in eighteen months of working under the old butler’s hyper-vigilant supervision, Nora saw his legendary composure completely fracture. Thomas wasn't looking down at Cassandra on the floor. His pale blue eyes were fixed in horror on the untouched glass of whiskey Julian had abandoned on the silver tray.

Then, with a subtle, chilling deliberation, Thomas took one step backward into the dark recesses of the service corridor, disappearing from view.
