Chapter 3 - The Weight of a Lion

The ballroom was dead silent, save for the patter of rain against the glass and Lily’s soft, hiccuping sobs.

Nathaniel stopped two paces away from them. The towering, intimidating billionaire—the man who routinely crushed corporate rivals and negotiated multi-million-dollar deals without blinking—slowly lowered himself onto one knee, ruining the crease of his expensive trousers against the soot-stained floor.

Grace looked up at him, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She expected pity. She expected him to offer a quick apology, hand her a check to buy new toys, and quietly dismiss them both to the staff quarters to sweep up the mess.

Instead, Nathaniel reached into his coat pocket.

He didn't pull out a checkbook. He pulled out a folded piece of heavy drawing paper, slightly crinkled at the edges, with a purple-maned lion, one blue paw, and a worried face.

He carefully unfolded it and held it out toward Lily.

Lily peeked her head out from behind Grace’s shoulder, her big brown eyes fixing on the paper.

“I keep him in my pocket every day,” Nathaniel said, his voice dropping all its corporate authority, softening into something warm and steady. “He protects me when the meetings get too loud. I think he dropped his guard for a minute tonight. I am so sorry, Lily.”

Lily sniffled, wiping her nose with the back of her small hand. She looked from Nathaniel’s face down to the crayon drawing, then back up.

“Is the lion okay?” she whispered.

“He’s fine,” Nathaniel promised, gently placing the drawing into her small, clean hand. “Not a single hair on his purple mane was singed. But I think he needs a new home where people don't burn things. What do you think?”

Lily blinked, a tiny, tentative smile breaking through her tear-streaked face. “He can live in my pocket.”

Nathaniel smiled back—a real, unfiltered smile that transformed his harsh features into something remarkably kind.

Then, he stood up, turned around, and faced the three hundred frozen guests, reporters, and investors still lingering near the edges of the ballroom.

“The gala is concluded,” Nathaniel announced, his voice carrying an absolute, unyielding authority that brooked no argument. “Security will guide you to your vehicles. Any photographs or video recordings of tonight’s incident uploaded to social media will be met with immediate, unsparing federal litigation from my legal team. Good evening.”

It didn't take twice. Within three minutes, the grand ballroom was entirely empty, save for the cleaning crew, Elena, Grace, and Nathaniel.
