CHAPTER 2: THE TRUTH COMES OUT
That evening I said nothing.
I placed everything back into the box and hid it in my car.
When Miguel came home, I watched him carefully.
He kissed my forehead.
Asked about dinner.
Complained about traffic.
Acted exactly like the loving husband I thought I knew.
For the first time, every word sounded fake.
The next day I hired a private investigator.
Within two weeks, the rest of the nightmare emerged.
Miguel had been living a double life for years.
The woman in the photographs wasn't just a girlfriend.
Her name was Sofia.
She believed she was his only wife.
He had told her that I was merely a business partner.
The investigator uncovered hidden bank accounts, fake addresses, and thousands of dollars that Miguel had secretly transferred from our joint savings.
The cash inside the mattress was only a fraction of what he had taken.
Then came the biggest shock.
Sofia wasn't helping him deceive me.
She was another victim.
When I contacted her, she broke down crying before I even finished explaining.
Miguel had been lying to both of us.

For years.
Together, Sofia and I compared stories.
The timelines matched perfectly.
Whenever he claimed to be working late, he was with her.
Whenever he told her he was traveling for business, he was with me.
Neither of us had known the truth.
But now we did.
And Miguel had no idea we were working together.
